Politics and regional governance in central american integration

The functioning of SICA, PARLACEN (Central American Parliament), and the Central American Court of Justice reflects the progress, tensions, and challenges of Central American integration. Strengthening the role of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) and granting it greater powers to influence regional integration requires a multidimensional approach that combines institutional reforms, greater political legitimacy, and a more direct link to the decision-making processes of the Central American Integration System (SICA). The Central American Integration System (SICA) is an economic, political, and social community of integration in Central America made up of the states of Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. It was established on December 13, 1991 (Central American Agricultural Council 2019). In this context, this paper analyzed how regional politics and governance influence Central American integration. It explored the main political actors, institutional structures, and challenges facing the countries of the region in achieving real and functional integration. It also examined the role played by organizations such as the Central American Integration System (SICA) and how the internal dynamics of each country affect collective decision-making.
