Business opportunities driven by the silver economy

Abstract

This study was motivated by research aimed at identifying business opportunities within the silver economy for the growing segment of older adults in the context of the demographic makeup of El Salvador and Latin America. The study focused on analyzing economic survival alternatives, productive and self-motivating activities, and the demand for products and services that can be supplied by companies that have recognized the business potential of this population sector. The research adopted a qualitative design with a sample of seven participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews and systematized through analysis by study categories. The findings revealed that very little is known about the topic; however, many people are already experiencing it and corroborating the growing importance of the silver economy. The study concluded that it is an unexplored business field, despite its market potential for both domestic and foreign companies. The need for more studies on the topic addressed and for greater visibility of the needs, expectations and demands of older adults was evident.
